Brooks Defyance 4 Review
The Brooks Defyance 4 are the updated model of the Defyance 3 but with the latest technologies applied to them. So if you’ve had success with the 3′s then the 4′s should work with you too. They are a light weight shoe so you should feel cushioned and light on your feet as you run. They’re designed for runners with normal or high arches. They help the running motion and gait for runners with these foot types. The price point is on the high side but with this you get a better shoe using the latest technologies to help you run and will last.
Upper – The upper is a lightweight breathable mesh fabric that will support the bridge of the foot and wick away moisture should it rain or you sweat a lot. There are synthetic leather overlays which perform better than leather as leather doesn’t like water and ages very quickly. The tongue and collar have light padding to keep your foot secure and comfortable as you run which is essential as the foot pushes against the tongue at varying parts of your stride.
Heel and Forefoot – The heel and forefoot both contain special HydroFlow units to provide excellent absorption of shock. This is specially needed in these areas of the foot as your weight is most impacted there. There is a shank like device in the shoe which promotes rigidity along the midfoot while allowing the heel and forefoot to act independently when you stride. The heel has a special crash pad to weaken the impact of the running surface which helps smoother transitions when you run.
Midsole – The midsole is where most of the technology is based and this is because it’s a really important part of the shoe. It connects the upper with the sole and is where the cushioning and other running enhancing parts of the shoe are. There is a full length S-257 Cushsole midsole which is a special compound that is resilient yet very flexible and provides maximum cushioning. There is a further full length piece in the midsole called BioMoGo which provides additional cushioning and is environmentally friendly. This will break down when the shoe hits the landfill as well as having a positive effect on your running stride.
Outsole – The outsole is important to provide you with both grip to stay upright on any running surface and yet flexible enough to ensure your feet can bend and feel natural as you run. The heel has HPR Plus which delivers superior durability on a hard wearing part of the shoe. It’s also important that the sole doesn’t add too much weight to the shoe and that’s why it’s made of blown rubber. This is a material that is light and flexible and can take the pounding that it’s likely to get from all your running.
