There is one thing you may suffer especially if you do many miles notably one long run a week. This is something distance runners do a lot especially when training for a marathon. This relates to the pain at the front of the lower leg you sometimes get after a succession of runs especially a long one. Running on concrete could be a factor in a cause so this should be avoided especially if you can run on grass which is very much softer. It is thought that dehydration or mineral or vitamin deficiencies could contribute to shin splints. There are several muscles around the lower leg and it’s thought that the inflammation or agitation of one of these could cause the pain.

It is flat feet or the wrong pronation that causes this problem with certain people and not others. Pronation is the rotation of the feet that occurs as you run. You land on your heel and the foot rotates inward until you lift off at the toe. This is nature’s shock absorber so if you have flat feet which interferes with this action or you pronate incorrectly then you’er more likely to get shin splints.

    Running shoes can help people with flat feet or those who pronate incorrectly. They can help correct the abnormal running action. It won’t stop you getting shin splints entirely as hard excessive training can cause shim splints even with the best training shoes. They can make a big difference if you’ve correctly identified the problem.

    The best running shoes for shin splints are the ones that rectify your problem. So you need to identify if you have flat feet. The best way to do this is with the wet paper test. Gently wet the bottom of your foot and place it on a sheet of paper so that you leave an imprint. It is by looking at this imprint where you can see if you have flat feet. If there is very little space where an arch should be then you have flat feet. Hopefully if you have flat feet this would have been recognized in school or college although this isn’t always the case.

    If you have flat feet then you need motion control running shoes. This prevents the over rotation or overpronation that occurs as you run. Simply make sure you get motion control running shoes and you’ll find running or your chosen sport easier and more enjoyable.
